Artificial Fragrances Vs. Naturally Derived Fragrances

4 Nov

Fragrance can be very inviting, intoxicating, and memorable. The problem is that we douse ourselves and our homes in artificial fragrances to smell good.

Nadine Artemis put it clearly in a post on TeraWarner.com.

“According to the FDA, synthetic fragrances may cause headaches, dizziness, allergic rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing, vomiting and skin irritation. Clinical observation shows fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity and irritability. Some of these chemicals are used in pesticides. Others are proven estrogenic and potential carcinogens, especially for the breast.”

To me the biggest issue with artificial fragrance, as noted above, is where it can fluctuate our hormones and be a potential carcinogen. In fact there are studies that prove some perfume formulations have been carcinogenic. Perfume companies, as well as others, don’t have to tell us what’s in their fragrance formulations because it’s considered a trade secret protecting their rights to not give away their formulas. But what about our rights and protecting us from potentially harmful airborne chemicals in our respiratory systems? I could go on, but I won’t. The point is to question everything we use that gives off a fragrance – perfumes, candles, air fresheners, beauty products, etc. Is it naturally derived? If it’s not, ask yourself is it worth the potentially harmful effects on your body and others (because those that are around you can smell your perfume, or those that are living in your home can smell your candles and air fresheners). Let’s not be selfish! Can you tell I’m passionate about this? Below are some nice options if you’re interested in making changes to your lifestyle. You can still smell good using naturally fragranced products with essential oils and herbs.
